10 Reflections On My Visit To Taipei Grand Mosque

As a travel blogger, I enjoy exploring different parts of the world, immersing myself in diverse cultures, and immersing myself in unique local experiences. One of the things I must do when I'm overseas is visit at least one mosque.

It's a personal tradition that allows me to see how Islam is practiced in various parts of the world. There's something profoundly moving about stepping into a mosque in a foreign land and I was lucky enough to get to visit the Taipei Grand Mosque during my recent visit to Taiwan.

The architecture, the people, the atmosphere — it's all unfamiliar yet deeply familiar at the same time.

Despite the differences in language, customs, and surroundings, the moment everyone comes together for prayer, a sense of unity and belonging washes over you. It's like finding a piece of home no matter where you are. It’s truly an amazing feeling, Masya’Allah.

This connection, this shared faith, transcends borders and cultures, creating a bond that is truly special. My recent visit to the Taipei Grand Mosque in Taiwan was no exception. The Taipei Great Mosque was completed in January 1950 and its opening ceremony was held on April 13, 1940, making it one of the most magnificent mosques in the Far East at that time.

Here are my reflections on this memorable experience:

1. Multilingual Sermons

Alhamdulillah, I was lucky enough to be able to visit on a Friday. One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Taipei Grand Mosque was the Friday sermon delivered in both English and Mandarin.

This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, regardless of their linguistic background, can understand and reflect on the message. It was fascinating to see how seamlessly the imam switched between the two languages, catering to the diverse congregation.

This practice embodies the Hadith, “The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like one body” – Sahih Bukhari. By bridging language barriers, the mosque fosters a sense of unity and inclusivity, making sure that no one feels left out or disconnected from the teachings of Islam.

2. Support for New Muslims

In the mosque’s washrooms, I noticed detailed signs on how to perform ablution, specifically catering to reverts and new Muslims. These guides, available in both English and Mandarin, show the mosque’s dedication to helping everyone feel comfortable and confident in their worship practices.

This thoughtful gesture is incredibly important, as it provides essential support to those who may still be learning about Islamic rituals. It reassures new Muslims that they are not alone in their journey and that the community is there to guide them every step of the way.

3. Halal Food Bazaar

The mini food bazaar within the mosque grounds was a delightful surprise. Featuring a variety of halal foods, from homemade goodies to convenient lunch packs, the bazaar creates a sense of community and shared culture. The vibrant atmosphere, filled with the aroma of delicious food and the sounds of friendly chatter, was a testament to the strong sense of community among the mosque’s attendees.

This initiative also supports local Muslim vendors and entrepreneurs, providing them with a platform to showcase and sell their products. It was heartening to see the community come together, not just for prayer, but also to support one another in their daily lives.

4. Halal Meat Van

Parked right outside the mosque was a van selling halal meat, making it easy for the community to access halal products. The importance of eating halal food is highlighted in the Al-Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah verse 168:

Which means: "O humanity! Eat from what is lawful and good on the earth and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. He is truly your sworn enemy.".

The availability of halal meat right at the mosque simplifies the process for many Muslims who might otherwise struggle to find halal options. This service underscores the mosque’s role as a central hub for the community, addressing both spiritual and practical needs.

5. Diverse Congregation

The mosque’s congregation was incredibly diverse, with attendees from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. This diversity, unified in faith, was a powerful reminder of the Islamic principle of Ummah, the global community of Muslims. It was inspiring to see people from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds come together for a common purpose.

Despite their differences, they were all united by their faith and the shared experience of Friday prayers. This congregation is a beautiful reflection of the inclusive and universal nature of Islam, promoting peace, harmony, and mutual respect among all believers.

6. Useful Signs

Throughout the mosque, signs in both English and Mandarin provided guidance and information, making it accessible to a wide audience. This attention to detail ensures that everyone, regardless of their background, can navigate the mosque comfortably.

From directions to the prayer hall to explanations of Islamic practices, these signs are incredibly helpful for both regular attendees and visitors. This thoughtful approach not only makes the mosque more user-friendly but also demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and education, helping everyone to feel welcome and informed.

7. Community Activities

From Quran study groups to cultural events, the mosque provides numerous opportunities for engagement and learning. These activities help to strengthen the bonds within the community, offering support and companionship to all members. It was inspiring to see such a vibrant and active community, dedicated to both spiritual growth and social connection.

8. Beautiful Architecture

The Taipei Grand Mosque itself is a stunning piece of architecture, blending traditional Islamic design with local Taiwanese influences. The serene ambiance and beautiful surroundings make it a perfect place for reflection and worship.

The mosque’s design, with its intricate details and harmonious layout, creates a peaceful and inviting atmosphere. The architectural beauty of the mosque is not just a visual delight, but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of Islam. It serves as a reminder of the importance of aesthetics in creating spaces that inspire and uplift the spirit.

9. Taiwan’s Muslim-Friendly Initiatives

Taiwan is actively working to make the country more Muslim-friendly. The government has partnered with the Chinese Muslim Association to create more halal-certified restaurants and hotels, install prayer rooms in public places, and organize cultural exchange programs to promote understanding and inclusivity.

These initiatives are a significant step towards making Taiwan a more welcoming destination for Muslim travelers. The efforts to accommodate and respect Muslim customs and practices are evident and greatly appreciated by the community. This commitment to inclusivity not only enhances the experience of Muslim visitors, but also fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture among the broader Taiwanese population.

10. A Touching Act of Kindness

Upon exiting from the female prayer room, I encountered a lady at the bottom of the staircase giving out a banana and a plastic bag that had two pieces of bread inside. The gesture itself was so touching, as it's advisable for Muslims to donate or share rizq (provisions) with others, even better if it's on a Friday. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Charity given during the day of Jumu'ah (Friday) is greater (in reward) than any other day."

But what made this moment even more memorable was a paper with a message written in Mandarin, which explained that this act was done in memory of her late sister, asking all the congregation to say a prayer for her sister. I shared one of the pieces of bread with my travel buddy and we both said a prayer for the kind lady and her sister. Masha'Allah, I was almost brought to tears just by this kind act itself.

My visit to the Taipei Grand Mosque was a delightful experience, showcasing Taiwan’s efforts to create a welcoming environment for Muslims. Witnessing the unity and harmony among the diverse group of worshippers was truly inspiring. It exemplified the Quranic teaching from Surah Al-Hujurat verse 13:

Which means: “O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.”

Despite their varied backgrounds, the worshippers came together as one, united in their faith and devotion. This powerful display of solidarity and brotherhood was a poignant reminder of the core values of Islam. It highlighted the strength and resilience of the Muslim community in Taipei, and their unwavering commitment to living out their faith in unity and harmony.

For anyone visiting Taiwan, the Taipei Grand Mosque is a must-visit, offering not just spiritual enrichment but also a glimpse into the harmonious blend of cultures and faiths. Taiwan’s commitment to becoming more Muslim-friendly is commendable, and the Taipei Grand Mosque stands as a shining example, providing a space where all Muslims can come together in worship and community.
