Sarawak Becomes First Malaysian State To Join Global Destination Sustainability Index

Eco-friendly travel has become much more common within the last few years. As Malaysia slowly eases lockdown restrictions and prepares to open borders for travel, destinations like Sarawak has been foraging the path of sustainable tourism due to the need of preserving its large natural environment.

Thanks to a sustainable mindset and practices, the state was recently included as part of the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GD-Index) for Business Events and Tourism - the first Malaysian state to do so!

According to Conference & Meetings World, the index is part of Sarawak's post-COVID-19 tourist development strategy aimed to position the state as a premier eco-tourism and corporate event destination by 2030. What makes this news more exciting is that it's one of 75 destinations in the world to undertake the project!

Kuching was selected as the index's pilot project based on 71 factors in four major areas - environmental performance, social advancement performance, destination supplier performance, and destination management performance. Other cities in Sarawak will be considered to follow suit such as Sibu and Miri.
