Can't go to Hong Kong for its delicious food? Let Hong Kong come to you! Curated by Chef Leon and his team, this culinary showcase will transport you to Hong Kong's rich culinary scene.
I was greeted by five stations when I arrived at Peppermint: The Aberdeen Village (fishing village), dai pai dong (big license stall), the Kowloon walled city, Cha Chaan Teng (tea restaurant) and the dessert station.
Each station brought its unique flair and flavour. Chef Leon did a great job of bringing iconic and forgotten Hong Kong dishes back to life. One dish that caught my eye was the old-school quail egg siew mai. Traditionally, siew mai is made with chicken or prawn, but back in the day, quail eggs were the go-to due to the high meat costs.
On to my top picks!
1. Typhoon Shelter Crab (Dai Pai Dong Station)
Created in the 1960s in fishing boats that housed typhoon shelters, this dish is a MUST-TRY. The crab was cooked to perfection; soft, flavourful and generously coated in cereal, giving it a delightful crunch. It was slightly spicy, but it was worth every bite. My cousin and I agreed that this would have been amazing with white rice and keropok (crackers) - delicious!
2. Hong Kong Curry Braised Beef Brisket (Cha Chaan Teng Station)
Inspired by Indian immigrants, this reminded me of a dialled-down version of Lemak Cili Api. The beef was so tender, it practically fell off the bone. And the gravy, it was so creamy! I found myself savouring every bite.
3. Cold Cuttlefish with Mustard and Soy Sauce (The Aberdeen Village)
The cuttlefish was fresh, tender and slightly umami. This was further enhanced with soy sauce and mustard. The mustard had a wasabi-like effect that I could not get enough of! It was so delicious when paired with other dishes too!
Overall, my experience was very insightful (It's a 9/10 for me). Each dish had its own story, bringing both history and flavour to the table. If you're a fan of Hong Kong's rich food heritage, this is your chance to experience history on your plate. Don't forget to make a reservation on this gastronomical journey!
