  • This tour offers a thrilling flight in a small aeroplane, showcasing the breathtaking highlights of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay.
  • From above, you’ll get an up-close view of the majestic Showa crater and witness the smoke billowing from the active volcano.

  • Sakurajima, an active volcano in Kagoshima, offers unforgettable experiences.

  • You can also get a feeling of the power of the volcano from the Yunohira Observatory, which is the closest viewpoint to the crater.
  • If you prefer getting around on your own or in a small group, you can rent a powered bicycle at Hotel Rainbow Sakurajima or a mountain bike at Sakurajima Visitors Center.
  • A full round trip of the volcano covers 36 kilometres and includes magnificent views of Kinko Bay, the Osumi Peninsula, Kaimondake, and of course the Sakurajima from different angles.
  • Whether you explore on foot, by bus or by bike, the best way to finish off a day exploring Sakurajima is by relaxing in a real volcanic hot spring. Stop by the Nagisa Park foot spa to enjoy views of Sakurajima while resting your weary feet before heading back to Kagoshima City.

Head to Kenbi Waraku Hananka (Amami no Sato) for a vegan meal. This restaurant offers a unique dish: Kagoshima's colourful vegetables in thick sesame soy milk soup with medicinal herbs.

Fun fact: This dish is similar to Keihan (chicken rice), a local cuisine from Amami Oshima, which is an island located halfway between Kyushu and Okinawa, rich in nature and was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in July 2021. Keihan is one of the representative local dishes of the Amami region. Shredded chicken, dried shiitake mushrooms, egg, papaya pickled in miso, and mandarin orange peels are placed on a bed of white rice and served with chicken broth.

Remember to make a reservation at least three days in advance!

  • Buses are available from Hakata, and the Shinkansen bullet train also runs between Hakata and Kokura, the largest gateway to Kitakyushu City.
  • Take the 'Kokura Station, Sunatsu-bound (Itouzu)' express bus, approx. 1 hr 10 mins. Get off at High Speed Sarakura Cable Station.
  • Alternatively, a free shuttle bus runs between JR Yahata Station and Sarakurayama Cable Car Sanroku Station.

  • Begin your day with a trekking adventure at Mt. Sarakura.
  • Now called Sarakura Hakkei, visitors can enjoy a fun ride on the cable car and slope car, or choose from numerous hiking trails to reach the summit's observatory.
  • If you have the time, an evening visit is also recommended. Because the breathtaking panoramic view dubbed the “10 Billion Dollar Night View,” is one of Japan’s “New Three Major Night Views.”
  • While you can trek during the day, the observatory’s Tenku Dome lights up in the evening, making it a favourite date spot!
