Singapore's Joo Chiat neighbourhood is full of historic buildings, streets - and food! One heritage halal-certified eatery in the area that's a must-try for anyone is definitely Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Original Popiah & Kueh Pie Tie, which has been around since 1938!

They specialise in (as their name suggests) popiah and kueh pie tie, but what sets them apart from other popiah sellers out there is their authentic handmade popiah skins. ? The family recipe dates back to when their ancestors were still living in China and hadn't migrated to Singapore yet! You can even stop by the shop between 8.30AM-11AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings to see the popiah skin being made live in front of you.

Today, the family maintains the heritage of their food by continuing to operate their eatery in a conserved pre-war shophouse. The shop has located there since before World War 2, and stepping foot into it feels like you're taking a trip back through time. Joo Chiat is a neighbourhood rich in history and heritage, and Kway Guan Huat definitely feels like it fits right in. ?

P.S. After you've finished your popiah, make sure to snap a photo with the mural right outside! ? Joo Chiat and the neighbouring area of Katong are full of artsy and Instagram-worthy murals to snap a photo with. Here are 10 of the best street art in Singapore in Katong, Kampong Gelam, and beyond!

Their handmade Nyonya-style popiah is the absolute must-try for any visitor. ? The popiah skin is paper-thin yet strong enough to hold all of the fillings in. Though the dish may seem simple to make and assemble, the homemade ingredients add a unique quality to it that can't be replicated anywhere else! Their Kueh Pie Tie also has a satisfying crunch that will get your appetite going. ?

Apart from popiah, their restaurant next-door also sells classic halal Chinese dishes such as Roasted Garlic ChickenSweet & Sour Chicken, and Hokkien Fried Rice. ? Once you've whetted your appetite with some popiah, it's time to chow down!

If you're really craving for Kway Guan Huat's popiah now but don't think you can finish it in one day don't worry! They even sell DIY Popiah Sets ($65) for online delivery or in-store pick-up that are perfect for a popiah party at home. ? The sets even include 20 popiah skins, seafood filling, and home-made condiments so you can bring them home and start making your popiah immediately.
