A visit to Amsterdam is never complete without trying one of its most popular street food snacks - the stroopwafel. This caramel-filled waffle cookie draws you in with its delicious smell and has you falling in love at first bite. And because of how well-loved they are, they’re sold in stores and make for popular souvenirs as well! But since a trip to the Netherlands isn’t really an option right now, baking it is the next best thing. Usually, you would need a pizzelle maker (a variant of a waffle iron) to make stroopwafels. But with this recipe, we’re simplifying it so you can make them without using one! Now, let’s jump right into this easy stroopwafel recipe ?
Ingredients (yields 12)
For the waffle
- ½ cup warm water
- 1 packet yeast rapid rise
- 4 cup flour
- 1 cup salted butter softened
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 eggs
For the filling
- 1 cup butter salted
- 1 ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 6 tbsp dark corn syrup
Equipment
Griddle and grill press (or a waffle cone maker)
Directions
- In a small bowl, pour warm water and add yeast.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour and butter. Add cinnamon, sugar, yeast mixture and eggs until well combined.
- Knead until a dough is formed. Then set aside.
- In a saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and dark corn syrup over medium-high heat. Stir frequently until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Warm a griddle to medium heat. Place a golf ball sized dough on the griddle and press with a lightly greased grill press. Hold it down for about 30 to 60 seconds until crisp and golden brown. Then, flip it over and press again for another 30 seconds.
- Remove from the griddle, then slice the waffle in half and spread a tablespoon of filling to create.
- Serve with your favourite cup of tea or coffee and enjoy!
