Cambridge needs no introduction - the richness of history and impressive architectural detail of the buildings can make even the non-history buffs fall in love with this place. And Cambridge became more majestic with the opening of Cambridge Central Mosque, Europe's 1st-ever eco-friendly mosque! Cambridge is about a 1h13 min drive from London, which makes it perfect for a day visit! ?

Opened to the public in 2019, the mosque was built to be environmentally sustainable, which aligns with the principles of Islam on the importance of preserving the environment and protecting natural resources. Every detail of the mosque is designed to minimise environmental impact - photovoltaic cells on the roof help generate renewable energy from sunlight, air-source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling to flush water used in washrooms, sedum roofs and passive ventilation.

Here's another interesting fact: the mosque has been built by timber structure as the defining feature using sustainable sourced spruce that is curved and laminated.

Since it's all about being green here, the gardens here are gorgeous - tulips, crab apple trees and other greenery reflect the elegance of this mosque! Tulips, especially, are popular in Islamic gardens, and we can't help but think how peaceful it must be to simply sit and relax in the presence of these beauties! ?

In addition to the mosque's dedicated areas (ablution, teaching, children's area, morgue), there is a café, teaching area and meeting rooms for use by the local Muslim and non-Muslim communities. It can accommodate up to 1000 worshippers! ?

The women's praying area, in particular, is something we have to discuss: three separate sections are available for women to use depending on their preference! After consulting with local female mosque users, the existing screen or partition was designed. It features different heights allowing the women to choose their preferred seclusion levels, from high to waist height to a central area with no screen. The screen can also be moved backwards and forwards according to gender ratios ?No more having to squeeze in cramped praying halls!

It must truly be amazing to be able to pray in a mosque that proves to be inclusive on all fronts while emphasizing our duty as Muslims to take care of our environment! Check out the video above on what it looks like! ?
