The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta is a former part of an international hotel chain. Established in 1976, this hotel is one of the 40 five-star hotels in Jakarta. With 700 rooms, dozens of meeting rooms and ballrooms, The Sultan was the ‘it’ hotel back in the day, and still hasn’t lost its charm.

The hotel is a calm oasis nestled in the heart of a bustling city. There was no noise from the street, only the lush green landscape of the complex and the peaceful chirping of the birds around us. It definitely made us feel like we were at a tropical island resort.

You can definitely feel the luxury vibe right from the lobby with its marble floorings, majestic chandelier and artworks. However, the best thing about the lobby is the friendly staff that greet you at the reception. Oh, hello there Indonesian hospitality! :)

We checked in, handed over our belongings to the concierge, and proceeded to our room at the 5th floor.

The room

A thoughtful gesture from our host on our one night stay.

We knew we were staying at a five-star hotel, but were still surprised by how spacious the room was. The interior is warm and welcoming, decorated with earth tones, and wooden furniture. You’ll receive complimentary mineral water, canned beverages, a pair of batik slippers, and a bathrobe upon arrival.

We stayed in the Grand Deluxe Room with a king sized bed, work desk, and a seating area by the window. The room size is about 45 square meters with central air-conditioning that can be controlled with a button on the side table. The TV has all the cable channels you need to cozy up in your blanket and there are even 2 wardrobes and mirrors. The bed was so comfortable, exactly what you need after getting off your flight to Jakarta.

The best thing about this room is that there’s enough room for you to pray (and a qibla direction!), even to do congregational prayer with your spouse or family.

One thing that makes this room extra special is the view from the window. You can see the lush city park that surrounds the complex of Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Correct, The Sultan Jakarta Hotel & Residence is located right by the sport complex. Hence, you can easily make your way to the arena whenever you feel like jogging or just walking around.

In the bathroom you will find an all marble washing room that will cater all your needs. The best part of it was of course the bathtub. Fill the tub with warm water, add some bath foam, and there you have it, your own mini spa to refresh and recharge.

The room was so comfortable that you might just want to stay inside for the rest of the day. However, the night is still young so you better go out and explore this grand hotel before calling it a day.

Sultan Pizzeria

We headed out to The Sultan Jakarta Hotel & Residence’s latest eatery, the Sultan Pizzeria, a laidback casual pizza and pasta restaurant by the hotel’s fountain area. Don’t worry if the weather isn’t perfect because there is also a semi indoor seating area at the Kudus Terrace by the pool. So, either way you will enjoy your meal with a view of the fountain and garden or the sparkling swimming pool.

Sultan Pizzeria’s pizza and pasta are freshly made in their open kitchen so you can see your meal is being made right in front of you. The restaurant itself is open every Thursday to Saturday from 6 PM to 9 PM.

We ordered a Seafood Marinara Pizza, Linguine Carbonara, and an Apple Pie for dessert. As you can see, all the food looked as good as it tasted. The pizza was just the right thickness topped with a generous serving of fresh seafood and tangy marinara sauce. The pasta was al dente and combined perfectly with the creamy cheesy carbonara. To finish the meal, we dig into Sultan Pizzeria’s apple pie that went extraordinarily well with the sauce and chocolate ice cream. We’ve had pizzas before, but Sultan Pizzeria’s definitely set the pizza bar higher for our taste buds after that night.

#HHWT Tip: Sultan Pizzeria is open to the public! You can just drop by and dine in (or take away) without having to stay at the hotel.

Halal status: Sultan Pizzeria uses only halal ingredients in its cooking and does not use alcohol in its dishes. But do note that it serves alcoholic beverages. This is a common practice amongst hotels in Jakarta. We recommend you dine at your own discretion.

After dinner, we managed to snap some pictures at the swimming pool. The rains that poured right before the dinner time had left the pool area wet, but the wet floor reflected the lights and added some extra sparkle to the picture. The high-rise hotel building also made a great background for the photos!

Breakfast

With COVID-19 precautions in mind, the hotel still serves breakfast at the restaurant from 6 AM to 10 AM. However, there is no buffet breakfast and the guest will be served individually. We were asked if we want American breakfast or fried rice, and we chose both options. Although there was no buffet, the top-quality service made up for it. All the meals were warm, perfectly seasoned, and the portion was generous too!

Facilities

Due to COVID-19 safety precautions not all of The Sultan Jakarta Hotels & Residence’s facilities are available at the moment. For instance, the pool area and spa are still closed to guests. But don’t worry, your stay at this hotel would still be as pleasant because there are so many other facilities you can enjoy.

Explore their enormous garden that stretches out from the pool area to the fountain and their own sports complex. Yes, you read it right. The Sultan Jakarta Hotels & Residence has their own sport complex! There is a pathway that you can follow for a jog or morning walk.

Other than jogging and walking, you can also indulge in your favorite sports. One thing that makes this hotel stand out is it is the only hotel in Jakarta with 11 tennis courts. One of these courts can also be converted into a basketball, futsal, or volleyball court. The hotel can even provide you with private tennis lessons upon request.

P.S. The gym is only open for a limited time during this period, from 7 AM to 2 PM. However, that is enough time to work up a sweat.

The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta is the place for you to experience authentic Indonesian hospitality. Not only are you spoiled by their service, but you can experience the city that never sleeps without sacrificing any comfort. Next time you fly to Jakarta, know that you’ll have a pleasant stay at The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta!
