Starting June 1, passengers flying from Malaysia to Asean countries will face increased passenger service charges. The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) announced on March 12 that fees at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 1 (KLIA1) will rise to RM73 (S$21) for Asean destinations.

This is an increase from the current RM35, while the charge for non-Asean destinations remains RM73. For Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 and other Malaysian airports, the new charge for all destinations will be RM50, representing a RM15 hike for Asean flights and a RM23 reduction for non-Asean flights.

Mavcom explains that the updated fees aim to aid the aviation sector's post-pandemic recovery. To spur local travel and ensure affordability, domestic travellers will pay the same fee of RM11 at all airports except for Johor’s Senai International Airport, which will raise the fee to RM16, said Mavcom.

Additionally, all airports will introduce a transfer fee of RM7 to RM42 for transit passengers to help cover airport infrastructure costs.
